Braves withstand late rally to top Padres

Baseball Betting Lines

07/09/2007 - San Diego, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kyle Davies threw six strong innings and Brian McCann homered and drove in four runs, as the Atlanta Braves held on to defeat the San Diego Padres, 5-4, in the finale of a three-game series at PETCO Park.

Kelly Johnson also homered and Andruw Jones recorded just his second three-hit game of the season for the Braves, who enter the All-Star break having won nine of 13 games to pull within two games of the NL East-leading New York Mets.

Davies (4-7) allowed one run on four hits, striking out six and walking two, picking up his first win in five decisions over his last six starts.

Jones also scored a pair of runs, registering his first three-hit game since May 29. The struggling center fielder, who entered the game hitting just .204, now has 14 hits in his last 13 games as he looks to turn around a poor first- half performance.

Mike Cameron went 1-for-4 with an RBI for the Padres, who have lost three of four and finished a seven-game homestand just 3-4. Michael Barrett had two hits, an RBI and scored a run and Milton Bradley recorded two hits and scored a run for San Diego, which goes into the All-Star break with just a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top spot in the NL West.

Former Braves pitcher Greg Maddux (7-6) started the game for the Padres and was hit with his second straight loss and third in four starts. The right- hander allowed five runs on six hits, striking out two and walking two, in five-plus innings of work.

The Braves started the scoring in the second inning when McCann hit a two-run homer and Johnson added a solo shot one out later.

San Diego cut the deficit to 3-1 in the third when Cameron doubled home Adrian Gonzalez, but that was as close as the Padres would get until a ninth- inning rally.

Atlanta forced Maddux from the contest in the sixth inning. When McCann singled home both Joneses for a 5-1 cushion.

San Diego rallied with two outs in the ninth. Barrett drove in Bradley with a double and scored on Kevin Kouzmanoff's base hit. Kouzmanoff then scored from second on Brian Giles' base hit. However, Atlanta's Bob Wickman got out of the trouble he created by striking out Marcus Giles looking with the tying run on second and go-ahead run on first.

Game Notes

Kurt Warner to start, Matt Leinart to watch

Despite the debate that's swirling , Kurt Warner will remain the starting quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals, coach Dennis Green said today. The Arizona Cardinals are the +7 point underdog at online sportsbook MySportsbook.com for this Sunday's game.

Green's comment came in a statement released by the team following an ESPN report that Green decided that rookie Matt Leinart would replace Warner as starter for Sunday's game at Atlanta.

"Generally talking about the starting lineup is not something we do," Green told the AP. "However, given the speculation that was out there we want to make it clear. We're disappointed after last week, but we still expect to be a playoff football team and we fully expect Kurt Warner to be the quarterback that leads us. That has not changed."

Football Betting Lines

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
