West-leading Padres resume homestand with visit from Nats

Baseball Betting Lines

05/28/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The National League West-leading San Diego Padres need just one more win to secure a fourth straight month of at least .500 baseball. They have a good shot at doing that tonight, with the Washington Nationals in town for the opener of a three-game series at Petco Park.

The Padres have been one of the biggest surprises this season and are tied with the New York Yankees for the second-best record in the majors at 28-19. Only the Tampa Bay Rays are better with a major league-best 33-15 ledger.

San Diego, which is two games ahead of Los Angeles and three games in front of Colorado in the division standings, kicked off a nine-game homestand by winning two of three games versus the St. Louis Cardinals. However, it had a four-game winning streak stopped and failed in a bid for a series sweep by dropping an 8-3 decision on Thursday. Wade LeBlanc started for the Friars and was dealt the loss for giving up four runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.

The loss didn't seem to bother Padres manager Bud Black.

"We have an exciting team," Black said. "I think our team is fun to watch. We're doing what we need to do to win games in a lot of areas."

Chase Headley and Jerry Hairston Jr. both drove in a run for San Diego, which will also host the New York Mets for three games on this homestand and is 14-10 as the host this season.

San Diego's chances of adding another home win tonight look good with Clayton Richard on the hill. The streaking left-hander is 4-0 with a 1.97 earned run average in his last five starts and tossed seven innings of one-run ball in last Saturday's 2-1 victory at Seattle. Richard struck out six Mariners and allowed seven hits with no walks to improve to 4-2 in nine starts this season.

Richard, who has worked five or more innings and permitted three runs or fewer in each outing in 2010, is 2-1 in five home starts this season and 6-1 with a 2.19 ERA in 11 career starts at Petco Park. He beat the Nationals in his only career appearance against them back on September 1 of last season, when he limited Washington to one run in seven frames of a 4-1 decision.

The Nationals will resume their 10-game road trip tonight and lost two of three matchups at San Francisco to open the trek. In Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Giants at AT&T Park, Sean Burnett suffered the loss in relief after surrendering two runs in the seventh inning. Craig Stammen started and was reached for three runs -- two earned -- in 6 1/3 frames.

Josh Willingham hit a solo homer and drove in two runs while Adam Dunn also belted a solo shot for the Nationals, who entered the series finale with three wins in their last four tries.

"We had innings and opportunities to add on and put numbers on the board and we need to do that," Dunn said.

Washington will also visit the Houston Astros for three games on this trip and will send John Lannan to the San Diego mound tonight for his 10th start of 2010. Since splitting his first two starts of the season, Lannan is 0-1 with a 4.95 ERA in his last seven starts and didn't record a decision in last Sunday's 4-3 win over Baltimore. He held the Orioles to a run and two hits in 5 1/3 innings.

The left-hander will try for his first win against the Padres Friday night, having gone 0-2 with a 3.12 ERA in four career starts in this series.

San Diego won four of six matchups with Washington a season ago and is 13-4 in the last 17 meetings between the teams.

2007 NFL Football Betting Preview

“You play to win the game!”

Those are the words of notoriously intense head coach Herman Edwards. Unfortunately, from a bettors’ perspective, most coaches don’t feel that way about the NFL preseason. August is a time to evaluate young players, finalize the depth chart and pray your star players stay healthy.

The trick to making money during the exhibition schedule is identifying coaches – like Edwards – who can’t stand losing even when there's nothing on the line.

The New York Jets betting won 15 of 21 preseason games and went 14-7 against the spread (ATS) during Edwards’s five-year tenure with the club. In his first season as the Kansas City Chiefs field boss, the team improved from 0-4 to 2-2.

Identifying win-a-holics like Edwards is a good start if you plan betting the preseason – even though most say you shouldn’t ... but what the hell do they know anyway?

Here’s a brief rundown of two teams that have a habit of winning during the second-stringers’ season, and another club that has a good chance of exceeding this year.

New York Giants betting lines

Playing in the media hub of North America can be stressful but the press can’t write anything negative about the way Tom Coughlin’s boys play in the preseason. The Giants won and covered all four games last summer, improving their record to 7-1 both straight up (SU) and against the spread over the last two years.

Coughlin has shown he’s not afraid to give his starters more time in the second preseason game than most of his colleagues, no doubt one of the reasons his team has been so dominant.

Dallas Cowboys betting lines

Bettors can count on America’s team early on. The Cowboys are 14-6 both SU and ATS since 2002 in warm-up contests. Former coach Bill Parcells, the coach of the team the last four years, has an intimidating, in-your-face presence – surely a reason Dallas has had so much early success.

The Big Tuna won’t be strolling the sidelines with looks of disgust, but new coach Wade Phillips will be anxious to make a good first impression for owner Jerry Jones.

Dallas plays the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos before things get serious. They then face the Houston Texans in their third contest (the game starters see most game time) and finish off with the Minnesota Vikings.

Expect a Dallas team able to walk away with another 3-1 preseason record.

Oakland Raiders betting lines

This team scored a league-worst 12 offensive touchdowns last season, so the rookies and veterans each have something to prove. There’s a bounty of first-unit jobs up for grabs and plenty of bodies competing for those slots.

First-time head coach Lane Kiffin will be eager to impress an owner who employs the philosophy, “Just win, baby!”

The 32-year-old Kiffin has to command respect from a locker room full of players older than him. All of these factors should lead to purpose in preseason.

Don’t forget: before playing like a team that belonged in NFL Europe, Oakland went 4-1 (both SU and ATS) in exhibition games.
