World Cup 2010 Preview: Paraguay tries to hit new heights

05/20/2010 -
Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Paraguay is coming off of its best-ever
performance in World Cup qualifying, finishing just one point behind Brazil,
and is poised to make its deepest-ever run in the World Cup.
Making its fourth consecutive appearance at the World Cup, Paraguay feels as
though it finally has the kind of offensive weapons the team has been lacking
in past years to go with a usually sturdy defense.
And striker Roque Santa Cruz, who will lead a talented group of forwards,
feels as though this could be the best Paraguay team ever.
"We are very good going forward now," Santa Cruz told FIFA.com. "Paraguay have
always had a reputation in South America for having one of the strongest
defenses on the continent, but lately we've also become known for our
attacking qualities.
"This combination will make us hard to beat. This is probably the best
national team in Paraguayan history, and we are hopeful of going further than
the round of 16 for the first time."
Having reached the second round in 1986, 1998 and 2002, Paraguay took a step
back in 2006, failing to advance past the group stage.
But after being drawn into a weak Group F that includes Italy, New Zealand and
Slovakia, Paraguay will not only be expected to return to the round of 16, but
maybe even advance further.
As usual, there are few questions in the Paraguay defense with experienced
goalkeeper Justo Villar between the posts, while Sunderland defender Paulo Da
Silva leads a steady back line.
The real difference in this Paraguay squad is up top, where despite the
absence of Salvador Cabanas, the team should have no trouble finding the back
of the net.
Cabanas led Paraguay in scoring during qualifying, but he was shot in the head
in January while at a bar in Mexico and, although he is on the road to
recovery, he will not take part at this summer's competition.
In his place, Santa Cruz will need to pick up the scoring slack, while Oscar
Cardozo will also play a big role.
Santa Cruz struggled for playing time at Manchester City this past season, but
his quality is there, while Cardozo put together a fantastic campaign for
Benfica with 25 goals in 28 games.
Lucas Barrios and Nelson Valdez, who were teammates at German club Borussia
Dortmund, will also figure into the mix in attack, and maybe give Paraguay
enough to reach the next level.
